Here are some tips to prevent home fires:

-Keep an eye on what you're cooking. Don't leave the kitchen if you're frying, grilling or broiling food. If you're boiling water, turn off the stove when you leave the room.

-Stay in the kitchen when you're cooking. If you have to leave, turn off the stove.

-Keep things that can catch fire away from your stove. This includes potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging and towels or curtains.

-Don't wear loose fitting clothes while cooking. They can easily catch fire if they come into contact with a flame or hot surface.

-Keep a lid nearby when you're cooking on the stovetop. If a pan catches fire, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flames. Never pick up a burning pan – you could get burned.

-Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

-Use space heaters safely. Keep them away from flammable materials and turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep.

-Be careful when cooking. Don't leave food unattended on the stovetop and keep a watchful eye on ovens and microwaves.
