Common Steel Post Sizes – What They Mean and How To Measure

Steel posts are commonly used for supporting walls and other structures. They can be installed in the ground, with screws or nails, or it might be necessary to set them into concrete. But before you start planning your project,

Steel posts are measured in inches and the most common sizes are 1-1/4, 1-3/8, 1-7/8 and 2 inches. There is also a standard size for posts that are used in concrete footings – 2-1/2 inches.

What are Steel Post Sizes?

Steel post sizes are used in construction to specify the size of the steel beam or post. The most common steel post sizes  are 8 feet, 10 feet, 12 feet and 14 feet. Steel posts are also available in other lengths, including 2 feet, 4 feet, 6 feet and 8 feet. To measure a steel post, first find its nominal diameter. Nominal diameter is the actual diameter of the steel post but it can be smaller or larger because it has been welded or otherwise joined together.

How to Measure a Steel Post Size

There are a few things you need to know before measuring a steel post size. First, the nominal size of a steel post will be based on the thickness of the metal it is made from. Second, the actual size you need will be slightly smaller than the nominal size because of the manufacturing tolerances. Finally, the height of the steel post will also be slightly taller than the nominal size due to manufacturing tolerances.
